In the event of damage and theft, a motor home is generally insured by the rental company. This also covers theft of accessories and rented equipment – for example, the camping chairs or barbecue. When you take over the rental vehicle, you will receive detailed information about the rental conditions, which also includes the insurance. Read these carefully and follow the instructions in the event of a claim.
If you cause a collision, the compulsory liability insurance of the rental vehicle will cover the damage caused to third parties. Damage to your own vehicle is covered by the fully comprehensive insurance, if available. Please note, however, that you will be charged a deductible and premium costs for the loss of a no-claims bonus in the event of a claim. This can quickly amount to a few thousand francs. This is why you should include an add-on to your personal liability insurance that covers such costs.
If the rental motor home is broken into and your personal belongings are stolen, your household contents insurance comes into play. However, this would not come under the basic cover included in a household contents policy as the burglary did not happen at home. Burglary of a motor home is treated as an external theft, which must be insured through an appropriate add-on.
The rest of your luggage and more valuable items such as cameras, mobile phones, laptops and even e-bikes are usually insured worldwide via the "theft away from home" add-on in your household contents insurance. Also pay attention to the sum insured in your policy as you will usually have more luggage with you in a motor home than on other trips.
In the event of an incident involving the vehicle, act in accordance with the rental conditions and inform the renter. In the event of theft, you should report it immediately and inform the insurance company. If it is an insured incident, the insurance will pay for an equivalent replacement, minus the deductible.
