Alpine Protection Forest Award

Helvetia is the official partner of the Alpine Protection Forest Award presented by the Consortium of Alpine Forestry Associations. The objective of the consortium is to rectify interregional and international problems relating to forest management in the Alpine region.

The Alpine Pro­tec­tion Forest Award

Since 2006, the Consortium of Alpine Forestry Associations (ARGE) has each year – expect for 2020 and 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic – honoured exemplary projects aimed at ensuring the proper management of protection forests and their sustainability as well as the maintenance of a balance between people and nature in Alpine regions. The Protection Forest Award is awarded in three main categories. In addition, special awards are presented by the jury or the organiser. It does so in the following categories:

  • Protection forest partnerships – PR work – innovation
Special Awards
  • Media price
  • Protection Forest Guardian 
  • Special Award from jury

All winners receive a wooden sculpture by the Tyrol artist Helmut Mayr and the nominated school classes can look forward to a contribution to their class fund. The cooperation with the Consortium of Alpine Forestry Associations (ARGE) strengthens Helvetia’s ties with the Alpine countries and promotes knowledge and understanding of the protection forest.

Alpine Protection Forest Prize 2024

On 22 March 2024, the 17th Helvetia Protection Forest Prize was awarded by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Alpenländischer Forstvereine (ARGE) at the SAL in Schan. The international jury honoured projects from Germany, Austria and Switzerland with an award. This year, Hubert Wenzel was honoured with the title of "Protection Forest Guardian".

Alpine Protection Forest Prize 2023

On 17 March 2023, the 16th Helvetia Protection Forest Prize was awarded in Innsbruck by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Alpenländischer Forstvereine (ARGE) in Klagenfurt (AT). The international jury honoured projects from Austria and Switzerland with an award. This year, Peter Webhofer was honoured with the title of "Protection Forest Sponsor".

Alpine Protection Forest Prize 2022

On 18 March 2022, the 15th Helvetia Protection Forest Prize was awarded in Innsbruck by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Alpenländischer Forstvereine (ARGE). The international jury honoured projects from Germany, Austria and Switzerland with an award. This year, Anton Mattle, former and long-standing mayor of Galtür, was honoured with the title of "Protection Forest Sponsor".

Alpine Protection Forest Prize 2019

At the end of January, the Working Group of Alpine Forestry Associations (ARGE) awarded the 14th Helvetia Alpine Protection Forest Prize in St. Gallen. The international jury honoured projects from Switzerland and Austria with an award. This year, the title of "Protection Forest Sponsor" was awarded to Raphael Schwitter from Pfäfers SG, a specialist teacher at the Maienfeld Forestry School and head of the Mountain Forest Management Centre.

Alpine Protection Forest Award 2018

On 1 February 2019, the Consortium of Alpine Forestry Associations (Arbeitsgemeinschaft Alpenländischer Forstvereine) presented the 13th Helvetia Alpine Protection Forest Award. The international jury honoured projects from Switzerland and Austria with an award. The title of “protection-forest patron” was this year granted to the carpenter and timber house builder Ruedi Walli from Fideris in the Prättigau region.

Alpine Protection Forest Award 2017

At the award ceremony for the 12th Helvetia Alpine Protection Forest Award in Kempten, Bavaria on 2 February, projects from Bavaria, St Gallen and Tyrol were honoured. Professor Ulrich Ammer was also recognized as a protection-forest patron for his services to protection forests.
