Various basic insurance models exist. The choice of model influences the premium amount and access to medical services:

• Free choice of doctor: Standard model with full service, but higher premiums.
• General practitioner model: You first consult your family doctor before consulting specialists.
• HMO model: You seek treatment at an HMO centre that coordinates all medical services.
• Telmed model: Before a consultation you call a telephone counselling centre.

The premiums depend on your place of residence, your age and the excess selected. By choosing a higher excess, switching to a cheaper model and comparing health insurance funds annually, you can save on your premiums. Take advantage of premium discounts, e.g. for annual payments, and only take out necessary supplementary insurance.

In order for you to be insured with your new health insurance fund as of 1 January of the following year, your previous health insurance fund must receive notice of termination of your health insurance by no later than the last working day in November.

Make sure that your termination reaches the insurer in time. In order to have proof of timely receipt, we recommend sending the notice of termination by registered mail.

Switching health insurance is worthwhile even if the benefits are the same, as premiums can vary greatly depending on the provider. In addition, some insurers offer better customer service, more flexible supplementary insurance and digital services.
